MealCount
Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2 October 2026
MealCount ("the app") is published by SnailPixel ("we"). It helps you log what you eat, see calories and macros against your goals, and track your weight and water.
The short version
- There is no account and no server of ours holding your data. We never receive your food diary, weight or goals, so we cannot see, sell or share them.
- Everything you log is stored only on your phone.
- The camera is used only to read barcodes, on your phone. No photo is taken, kept or sent.
- The free version shows ads from Google AdMob, which may be personalised using your device's advertising ID. Nothing you log is ever sent with an ad request.
- Anything else that leaves your phone is something you choose to send: a backup file or a CSV export.
Information you enter in the app
- Your profile and goals: body type used for the calorie formula (female, male or prefer not to say), year of birth, height, weight, goal weight, pace, activity level, calorie and macro targets, units and reminder times.
- Your diary: the foods you log, amounts, meals and dates, quick-added calories, water, and whether you finished a day.
- Your foods: foods and labels you type in (including the barcode of a product you entered yourself), recipes and their ingredients, favourites, and which foods you used recently.
- Weigh-ins: the weights and dates you log.
This is kept in the app's private storage on your phone, protected by Android's app sandbox. None of it is sent to us or to anyone else by the app. Your calorie targets, weight trend and burn estimate are all worked out on your phone.
Barcode scanning and the camera
When you tap Scan, the app uses your camera to read the barcode on a product. The image is analysed on your phone by Google ML Kit's barcode reader, which is built into the app and works offline. No photo or video is saved, and no image leaves your phone. The barcode number is then looked up in the food packs on your phone. You can also type a barcode instead of using the camera.
Like other Google ML Kit features, the barcode reader may send Google anonymous technical metrics about how the reader performs (for example device model, app version and whether a scan succeeded). It does not send images or barcode contents. See ML Kit terms.
Food data and food packs
Generic foods come from USDA FoodData Central (public domain) and are built into the app. Packaged foods with barcodes come from Open Food Facts, available under the Open Database License (ODbL). You can download a pack for your country inside the app.
A pack download is a plain request for a static file from snailpixel.com. The app does not send anything about you, your diary or your searches. As with any website, our web host sees the request (including your IP address) and may keep standard server logs for a short time for security; we do not use them to identify you. Once a pack is on your phone, searching and scanning happen entirely offline.
Data that leaves your phone only when you choose
- Backup file (Me > Back up to a file): a JSON file with your diary, foods, recipes, weigh-ins and settings. You decide where to save or send it. It is not encrypted, so keep it somewhere private. We never receive it.
- CSV export (Me > Export diary): spreadsheets of your diary and weigh-ins, handed to Android's share sheet.
Once you share a file, the app you share it with (email, cloud drive and so on) handles it under its own privacy policy. Android cloud backup and device-to-device transfer are turned off for this app, so your data is not copied into Google backups. This also means that if you uninstall the app or lose your phone without a backup file, we cannot recover your data.
Advertising (free version)
The free version shows ads from Google AdMob: a banner at the bottom of the diary screen, an occasional full-screen ad after you close the summary of a finished day (never while you search, scan or log food, never in your first days with the app, and at most every few finished days), and an optional video ad you can choose to watch for a 24-hour pass to Plus insights. Plus subscribers see no ads, and the ads library is not started for them.
Ads may be personalised: Google AdMob can use your device's advertising ID to show ads based on your interests. You can reset or delete your advertising ID, or opt out of ads personalisation, in your Android settings at any time. The app removes Android's Privacy Sandbox ad permissions (Topics, Attribution and the ad services ID). Nothing you log (foods, weight, goals or searches) is ever included in an ad request.
To show, measure and protect ads, Google AdMob itself may collect your IP address (which can indicate approximate location), device and app information (such as model, OS version, app version and language), ad interactions (views and taps), diagnostic and fraud prevention signals, and your advertising ID and app-set identifier. See Google's privacy policy and How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, the app shows Google's consent form before any ad is requested where required; if you do not consent, ads are not personalised. You can change your choice at any time in Me > Ad privacy choices.
Purchases (MealCount Plus)
MealCount Plus is an optional subscription sold through Google Play Billing. Google handles the payment and your payment details; the app only learns from Google Play whether your subscription is active, and remembers that on your phone. You can manage or cancel it in Google Play > Payments & subscriptions.
Permissions
- Camera: only to read barcodes when you tap Scan. The app works fully without it.
- Internet and network state: to load ads (free version), talk to Google Play for purchases, and download food packs you ask for. Your diary never uses the network.
- Google Play billing: the Plus subscription.
- Notifications: meal and evening reminders you switch on.
- Advertising ID: used by Google AdMob to show and measure ads in the free version, including personalised ads where you allow them.
- Run at startup: re-schedules your reminders after the phone restarts.
- Vibrate, wake lock, foreground service: added by Google libraries (ads, billing, notifications) to deliver notifications and purchases reliably.
The app does not use location, contacts, microphone or storage permissions. Restoring a backup uses Android's own file picker, so the app only receives the one file you choose.
What we do not do
- We do not run a server that stores your data, and we do not collect your diary.
- We do not use analytics, crash-reporting or tracking SDKs (no Firebase, no Crashlytics, no Facebook SDK).
- We do not sell or share personal data, and we do not use your data to train AI.
Health data laws
Weight and food logs can be health information. We do not collect "consumer health data" as defined by laws such as Washington's My Health My Data Act, Nevada SB 370 or Connecticut's privacy law, because this information stays on your device and is never transmitted to us or to third parties by the app.
Under the GDPR and UK GDPR, it is processed only on your device, by you, so we do not process it. For the limited data Google processes for ads, the legal basis is your consent where required and otherwise legitimate interests; Google acts under its own policies.
Your rights and deleting your data
Your data is already in your hands. You can view and edit it in the app, take a copy with a backup file or CSV export, and delete everything with Me > Delete all data. Uninstalling the app also removes everything it stored, including downloaded food packs. Backup and export files you saved elsewhere are yours to delete. There is no account, so there is nothing for us to delete on a server. For ad data, use Me > Ad privacy choices or Google's tools.
Not medical advice
Calorie and macro targets, weight projections and the burn estimate are estimates for general wellness, not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Talk to a doctor or dietitian before making big changes, especially if you are pregnant, under 18 or managing a health condition.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 (or 16 where local law requires), and we do not knowingly collect information from children.
